Do Security Systems Work During Austin Power Outages?

Your alarm panel may still be working when a camera goes offline. During a power or internet outage, the answer depends on which part of the system lost power, how it communicates and where it stores video. A panel battery, a cellular alarm connection and a video recorder each solve a different problem.

For homeowners and small businesses in Austin, Hutto, Round Rock and the surrounding Central Texas area, October is a useful time to review that design before winter weather and holiday absences. Start with an equipment-by-equipment plan rather than assuming that everything connected to one app has the same backup.

The short answer: separate the alarm from the video

  • Alarm panel: a charged, compatible backup battery can keep supported alarm functions operating temporarily. An active cellular communicator can provide an alarm communication path when home internet is unavailable, subject to coverage, service and system condition.

  • Cameras: each camera still needs its own power source. A camera powered by a wall adapter or a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch can stop when that supply loses power.

  • Network equipment: a router, Wi-Fi access point and PoE switch may be essential to the video path. Backing up only the camera or recorder can leave a missing link.

  • Recorder: an SVR or CSVR needs power and a working local connection to its compatible cameras. Remote viewing and local recording have different requirements.

What if the internet fails but the power stays on?

A properly configured cellular alarm connection does not depend on your home Wi-Fi to carry alarm signals. That does not mean the same connection carries all of your camera video. Confirm your installed communication path with your provider; an app that cannot display video is not by itself proof that alarm communication has failed.

Alarm.com states that an SVR/CSVR can continue recording during an internet interruption when the cameras and recorder retain their local IP addresses and the local network is not disrupted. The online SVR Timeline is unavailable without an internet connection. Local display behavior also varies by recorder model and outage duration.

For a broader explanation of event clips, continuous video and retention, see our cloud clips, SVR and CSVR recording guide.

What if utility power fails?

The alarm panel’s internal battery is not a backup supply for every camera, network device or recorder in the building. Ask which alarm devices remain supported on battery and what functions change. Expected runtime depends on the installed equipment, battery condition, load and configuration; a general product claim is not a promise for your particular property.

For video continuity, a technician should map the complete power chain. A Wi-Fi camera may need backup at its power adapter and at the access point. A PoE camera depends on its switch or injector. The recorder and any network equipment between it and the cameras must also remain powered.

A suitably sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can provide temporary backup for selected equipment. Choose it around the combined load and the runtime you actually need. Keeping one priority entrance recorded for a short interruption may require a different design from keeping every business camera operating. Battery backup cannot provide indefinite operation or restore an internet provider’s failed service.

Five questions to ask before buying more equipment

  • Which functions matter most during an outage: sending an alarm, saving video locally, viewing video remotely, or a combination?

  • Which devices must stay powered for those functions, and are they actually connected to backup power?

  • What runtime is realistic under the installed load, and when was each backup battery last checked?

  • Can the recorder continue locally without internet, and what changes in playback or export access?

  • Who receives power-loss or communication notices, and who will follow up when the property is unattended?

For a business with access control, include door controllers and lock power supplies in the review. Ask the installer to explain the intended behavior of each door during a power interruption. Do not change door hardware or power arrangements as an informal test.

Plan a supervised check, then confirm recovery

Arrange testing with your security provider. Ask whether the monitoring account needs to be placed on test and how that affects response during the test window. Do not disconnect equipment, generate an alarm or switch off building circuits to experiment without an agreed procedure.

  • Record the starting status of the panel, cameras and recorder, including any existing battery or communication warnings.

  • Have the technician verify the intended backup and communication behavior under a controlled procedure.

  • Check the saved video from the test period rather than relying only on a live picture.

  • After normal service is restored, confirm that cameras reconnect, recording resumes and panel trouble messages clear.

  • Keep a simple written record of the equipment covered, observed limitations and follow-up work.

Use your electric utility’s official outage information for restoration updates. Austin Energy customers can find its outage map, alerts and preparedness resources. Properties elsewhere in Central Texas should use their own utility’s resources. An alarm or camera notification does not establish a utility’s restoration time.

Two common outage questions

Does “wireless” mean a camera works without electricity?

No. Wireless may describe the network connection rather than the power supply. Check how the specific camera is powered and which network devices it needs. Do not assume a wireless camera has a built-in battery.

Does a working alarm panel mean my video is being recorded?

No. Alarm operation, video capture, local recording and remote viewing are separate functions. Storage capacity like an SD card, SVR or CSVR allow the cameras to record without internet but a power source is still required. Verify each one in the installed configuration.

Build an outage plan around your Austin-area property

SecuriMax provides professional security installation, monitoring and local support for Austin-area homes and businesses. We primarily install 2GIG Edge panels, also install some Qolsys panels, and provide Alarm.com cameras, SVRs, CSVRs and access control. Available functions depend on compatible equipment and the selected service configuration.

Planning a new system or reviewing an existing one? Tell us which entrances matter most, whether you need local recording during internet interruptions and how long you want selected equipment to operate on backup. Call 512-522-7233 or book a consultation so we can review the complete design.
