What Should I Know About Security Camera Resolution and Quality?
What Should I Know About Security Camera Resolution and Quality? Resolution is only one part of useful video. The camera must also have an appropriate view, suitable lighting, a reliable connection and recording settings that preserve the detail you need at the intended distance.

Start With the Image You Need
Ask whether you need an overview of activity or a more detailed view of a person entering a particular area. A camera covering an entire driveway may provide less detail on a face than one designed for a closer entrance view.
A specification number cannot answer that placement question. Look at the recorded image from the proposed location.
My Usual Starting Recommendation
For a new installation, I generally recommend at least 4 MP resolution and built-in analytics appropriate to the application. That recommendation comes from more than 30 years working with cameras and security systems.
It is not a promise that every 4 MP camera will identify a person or may read a vehicle plate. Distance, field of view, lens selection, motion and lighting still matter.
Check Nighttime Performance and Recording
Daylight demonstrations can hide a problem that appears after dark. Discuss the actual lighting, reflective surfaces and where people will move. Ask to evaluate a relevant recorded event, not only a still live view.
Also clarify the recording mode, retention and export process. Useful analytics can help organize events when supported and configured, but they do not replace appropriate placement or capture every relevant event perfectly.
Ask for a Demonstration You Understand
Have the installer explain:
What the intended subject will look like at the expected distance.
How the view changes after dark.
Where footage is stored and how long it is expected to remain available.
Which settings and network conditions affect the result.
SecuriMax installs Alarm.com camera solutions and compatible recording options. We can discuss the view and recording requirements before recommending equipment, so the resolution number supports the design instead of becoming the whole sales pitch.
